The problem
Intervention: Erxiekang Emplastra (traditional medicine patch) as adjunctive therapy added to standard treatment
Who it was tested with: Children aged 1 to 14 years hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis (417 exposed, 672 unexposed).
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"This single-center retrospective cohort study reviewed electronic medical records of children hospitalized with AGE between January 2024 and March 2025. Eligible patients were categorized into an exposed group receiving Erxiekang Emplastra plus standard therapy and an unexposed group receiving standard therapy alone." The study compared outcomes between two groups receiving different treatments but lacks the randomization and prospective design needed for strong causal inference.
Retrospective design without randomization; no blinding; unmeasured confounding variables; single-center study limiting generalizability; authors acknowledge need for large-scale multicenter prospective randomized controlled trials
