The problem
Intervention: Placement of school nurses in elementary and secondary schools to provide health-related expertise and education
Who it was tested with: Children aged 11+ years (n=2,773), parents (n=3,978), and teachers (n=420) in 28 public schools across two German states.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Children (11+ years, n = 2773), parents (n = 3978) and teachers (n = 420) participated in a 2017 baseline (T0) survey. Data collection was repeated in 2018 (T1)." The same population was measured before and after the school nurse placement without a comparison group, making this a pre-post design. Results were mixed because improvements were significant for children and parents but not for teachers.
No comparison group to control for secular trends; intervention was non-specific and poorly defined; relatively short follow-up period of one year; school nurses are unusual in German schools so generalisability is limited; actual health outcomes were not measured.
