The problem
Intervention: Parental engagement through discussions with adolescent girls about school performance, friendships, menstruation, pregnancy, free time, and personal issues
Who it was tested with: Unmarried adolescent girls aged 15-19 years in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, India.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We applied unadjusted and adjusted multinomial regression models to assess associations between our exposure variables and each outcome variable." The study used a longitudinal design with baseline parental engagement measures and follow-up measurement of marriage outcomes 3 years later, meeting criteria for an experimental design with comparison of different exposure levels.
Observational design cannot establish causation; may reflect reverse causation or unmeasured confounding. Results specific to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar; generalisability unknown.
