The problem
Intervention: Gender-transformative program that encourages men and boys to reflect on dynamic and conflicting concepts of masculinity
Who it was tested with: Men and boys aged 15 to 49 years in Rakai, Uganda; youth and young adults who participated in the gender-transformative program.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"The divergence of masculinity was observed among youth and young adults who participated in a gender-transformative program, suggesting the effectiveness of the program." The study uses observation of changes in masculine norms among program participants as evidence, but the qualitative design and lack of comparison group limit the strength of this conclusion.
The study is qualitative without a control group or quantitative measures of violence outcomes. The observation of divergence among program participants is noted but not rigorously measured or compared to a non-participant group.
