The problem
Intervention: Provision of quintuply-fortified salt (containing zinc, vitamin B-12, folic acid, iodine, and iron) for 12 months compared to iodized salt
Who it was tested with: 470 preschool children aged 12-59 months in Punjab, India, living in households randomly assigned to salt type.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This was a substudy of a double-blinded, household-randomized, controlled, community-based trial" with households randomly assigned to receive one of three salt types and micronutrient status measured at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months using continuous and binary outcomes analyzed with regression models. This represents a rigorous experimental design with comparison groups and multiple measurement points.
The intervention did not improve iron, zinc, or iodine status despite fortification with these nutrients. The study was limited to one region in India and a 12-month follow-up period, so longer-term effects and generalizability are unknown.
