The problem
Intervention: Deinfibulation (surgical correction of infibulation before or during delivery)
Who it was tested with: Women with type III FGM/C (infibulation) delivering in various healthcare settings worldwide.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Deinfibulation achieved similar obstetric and neonatal outcomes to women who never had type III FGM." This finding demonstrates that surgical correction of infibulation before delivery can mitigate the adverse outcomes otherwise associated with type III FGM, providing evidence that the intervention works to restore normal obstetric outcomes.
Only observational studies were included with no randomized trials. High heterogeneity in analyses. Low overall GRADE evidence level. Limited data on the timing and methods of deinfibulation across studies.
