The problem
Intervention: Feeding energy-dense thick sorghum porridge (starch-enriched) compared to traditional thin porridge and enzyme-thinned calorie-dense porridge
Who it was tested with: Stunted toddlers (n=24) and healthy toddlers (n=24) aged 18-30 months in Bamako, Mali.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Experimental porridges, including a traditional porridge (control), a starch-enriched calorie-dense thick porridge, and an α-amylase-thinned calorie-dense porridge, were fed to stunted (n = 24) and healthy (n = 24) 18-30-month toddlers. Breath test results were expressed as Percent Dose Recovery and curve fit using the Weibull function to determine the kinetics of starch digestion." This randomized comparison using objective biochemical measurement demonstrates that stunted children can digest energy-dense thick porridge despite slower initial kinetics.
Small sample size (24 per group); single-site study in Mali; only measures digestion capacity over short term with breath test, not long-term nutritional outcomes or growth; does not assess palatability or acceptance by children or caregivers
