The problem
Intervention: Clinical and laboratory assessment combined with transcranial Doppler ultrasound imaging to identify predictors of stroke risk
Who it was tested with: 110 children aged 2-14 years with steady-state sickle cell anemia.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This study used a cross-sectional observational design, with study participants (steady-state SCA children, aged 2-14 years) recruited consecutively." The study identifies correlates of stroke risk rather than testing an intervention, making it a descriptive assessment of prognostic factors in a defined population.
The study establishes associations and correlations but cannot determine whether these factors cause increased stroke risk or are merely markers of underlying disease severity. No comparison group or intervention outcome is measured.
