The problem
Intervention: Integration of physical activity into academic classroom lessons (active classrooms) compared to traditional sedentary classroom lessons
Who it was tested with: School-aged children (approximately 6,181 students across 25 studies).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We searched ERIC, PubMed, PsychINFO, and Web of Science, reference lists of included studies for randomised controlled studies. Independent reviewers screened the texts of potentially eligible studies and assessed the risk of bias. Data were pooled using random-effects models on standardized mean differences." The study pooled results from multiple randomised controlled trials with comparison groups, making it an experimental design, though individual study quality was variable.
Most included studies had some or high risk of bias; unclear which specific types of physical activities were most effective; limited information on whether effects varied by age group or other student characteristics; outcomes may not represent the full spectrum of important student outcomes
