The problem
Intervention: Reduction of maternal ultra-processed food consumption during lactation
Who it was tested with: 111 mother-infant pairs up to 150 days postpartum.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A cross-sectional analysis was conducted with 111 mother-child pairs up to 150 days postpartum. Infant feeding practices were assessed using WHO indicators, and malnutrition was evaluated by length-for-age and BMI-for-age." The study measured associations between exposure (maternal UPF consumption) and outcomes (infant malnutrition indicators) at one point in time without manipulation of the exposure or randomization, making it observational research at the practitioner evidence tier.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation. No comparison group. Dietary intake estimated by two 24-hour recalls which may not represent usual intake. Small sample size limits generalizability.
