The problem
Intervention: A basic package oral care training program delivered through either workshop-only or workshop plus one-year mentorship approaches
Who it was tested with: Primary health care nurses in Kenya (n=67: 33 mentorship, 34 workshop-only) and parents of children receiving their care (n=1,128).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Implementation followed a quasi-experimental design to deliver a 1-y postworkshop mentorship program (experiment) against a workshop-only (control) group." The study used a comparison group design with baseline and endline measurements to evaluate whether adding mentorship to workshop training improved outcomes for nurses and ultimately for children's oral health practices.
Small sample size of 67 nurses from a single country limits generalizability. Long-term sustainability of outcomes beyond the one-year study period is unknown. The study does not provide detailed information about the fidelity or quality of mentorship implementation.
