The problem
Intervention: Treatment with moxifloxacin as part of an antimycobacterial regimen (often combined with ethambutol and clarithromycin)
Who it was tested with: 10 children with disseminated BCGitis and underlying immunodeficiency (MSMD, SCID, or HIV).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This retrospective descriptive study included children who had been diagnosed with disseminated BCGitis and treated with an antimycobacterial regimen including moxifloxacin for more than two weeks from 2007 to 2017 at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia." The study documents clinical experience with moxifloxacin dosing and safety in a specific patient population but lacks the design rigor to establish efficacy.
Small sample size, no control or comparison group, retrospective design without standardized outcome measures, single-center experience, heterogeneous patient population with different underlying immunodeficiencies and variable combination therapy regimens
