The problem
Intervention: Multicultural doula support provided alongside standard antenatal and childbirth care
Who it was tested with: Newly arrived migrant women (n=339 with support, n=339 without) giving birth in Norwegian hospitals 2018-2023.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This was a multi-centre case-control study involving all nine hospitals actively running the MCD program... Women who received MCD support at the time of childbirth (n = 339), from 2018-2023, were compared to similar newly arrived immigrant women who did not receive MCD support (n = 339) and gave birth within the same timeframe. Hospital records were reviewed, and outcomes were analysed using binary logistic regression." The comparison group and statistical adjustment methods meet the definition of a quasi-experimental design with a comparison group.
Case-control design without randomisation; unmeasured confounders may explain differences; selection bias possible in who received doula support; outcomes measured at discharge, not longer-term impacts on child development.
