The problem
Intervention: Non-pharmacological treatments including dietary, psycho-educational, physiotherapeutic, complementary medicine interventions, and electrical stimulation
Who it was tested with: 7,787 children (50.4% female) with functional constipation.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Randomised controlled trials (RCTs), including children (0-18 years) with FC treated with non-pharmacological interventions compared with placebo, no treatment or other interventions, were included." The review synthesised evidence from randomised trials with comparison groups across multiple non-pharmacological interventions for constipation in children.
Substantial heterogeneity, poor reporting, and imprecise data across included trials led to downgrading of certainty assessments. Most therapies provided very low certainty evidence, limiting the ability to draw firm conclusions about efficacy.
