The problem
Intervention: School-based multicomponent intervention consisting of an 8-minute educational video followed by a 30-minute facilitated discussion, supplemented by text reminders
Who it was tested with: Parents (n=193 intervention, n=181 control) of elementary school children in rural Indonesia; daughters aged approximately 10-12 years.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A mixed-methods study was conducted using cluster-randomized controlled trial (cRCT) supplemented by a qualitative descriptive phase. Ten eligible elementary schools in Indonesia were randomized (1:1) to intervention (n = 193 parents) or control (n = 181 parents) groups." This represents a rigorous experimental design with random allocation to intervention and control groups, measured outcomes across multiple domains (knowledge, attitudes, behavior), and qualitative exploration of mechanisms, meeting the criteria for experimental evidence tier.
The study is limited to rural Indonesia and may not be generalizable to other settings; the improvement in vaccine uptake, while statistically significant, was modest in magnitude; attrition rates were low (0.52-1.31%), suggesting good retention, but long-term follow-up on sustained vaccination completion is unclear.
