The problem
Intervention: Sleep interventions including ENT surgery, CPAP therapy, melatonin, or combinations thereof
Who it was tested with: Children with Down syndrome aged 3-16 years attending a sleep clinic (16 intervention, 25 control).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Children with DS, 3-16yrs, attending the sleep clinic were followed for 24-months. Sleep parameters including parent completed child sleep habits questionnaire (CSHQ), PSG and home sleep diary were obtained pre and post sleep interventions for children undergoing treatment. Data was obtained at similar intervals for the control group who were followed over the same time period." The design includes a comparison group and multiple measurement points, meeting criteria for experimental evidence tier.
The study measures only objective improvement in airway obstruction and total sleep duration, but does not explain the persistent parent-reported sleep difficulties or explore what non-respiratory sleep disorders might be present. Sample size is relatively small and the study does not report country of conduct or specific selection criteria for intervention.
