The problem
Intervention: Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI), a periodic intensification of routine immunization strategy implemented through targeted campaigns in 2017–2018
Who it was tested with: Children in 40 sampled districts across India; the program targeted both vaccinated and unvaccinated children to increase complete immunization coverage.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"In 40 sampled districts, we measured the incremental economic cost of IMI using primary data, and used a quasi-experimental impact evaluation to estimate incremental vaccination doses delivered." The quasi-experimental design with primary cost data and impact evaluation allows inference about the intervention's effectiveness beyond the intervention group, meeting the EXPERIMENTAL tier standard.
Uncertainty intervals are wide and include zero for deaths averted, reducing precision of impact estimates. Analysis covers only sampled districts and may not reflect all implementation contexts. Cost-effectiveness depends on model assumptions in the Lives Saved Tool.
