The problem
Intervention: Integrated assessment and identification of psychosocial and biological risk factors (emotional neglect, depression severity, anxiety, shame-proneness, and cortisol dysregulation) to guide clinical management
Who it was tested with: 177 Chinese inpatients aged 10-16 years with major depressive disorder diagnosed by DSM-5 criteria.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This cross-sectional study included 177 inpatients aged 10-16 years. Participants were assessed using [multiple psychosocial and biological measures]... binary logistic regression to identify independent associated factors of NSSI." This is descriptive research identifying correlates of self-injury rather than testing an intervention to reduce it, so it provides practitioner knowledge about risk factors but not intervention evidence.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation; study limited to hospitalised patients in China; no intervention was tested, only risk factor associations identified; findings cannot determine whether identified factors cause NSSI or result from it
