The problem
Intervention: Social mobilisation programme involving religious leaders in polio vaccination campaign
Who it was tested with: Hard-to-reach parents of children eligible for polio immunisation in Nigeria, selected by child age, religion and social status.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Nigeria began to make success only when one of the most respected Muslim leaders took ownership of the campaign for the elimination of polio, which has now placed Nigeria among the polio-free countries." This demonstrates the intervention's mechanism: religious leader engagement directly improved vaccination programme outcomes in the hard-to-reach population.
The study relies on qualitative data from interviews without quantitative before-and-after vaccination coverage metrics. It is not clear if this was a retrospective analysis or concurrent observation. No comparison group or control condition is described.
