The problem
Intervention: Daily chicken egg complementary feeding for 6 months
Who it was tested with: 500 infants aged 6-9 months in Jouberton, South Africa.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A randomised controlled trial was conducted in Jouberton, South Africa, among 500 infants randomly assigned equally to either an intervention group receiving a daily chicken egg or a control group. Both groups were followed up for 6 months." The study used random assignment and follow-up measurement to evaluate the effect of daily eggs on biomarkers associated with growth.
Secondary analysis of biomarkers only; unclear whether egg intervention improved actual growth outcomes compared to control group; cross-sectional associations between biomarkers and growth outcomes do not establish causal mechanisms
