The problem
Intervention: Assessment and identification of anaemia and iron deficiency status through clinical and biochemical testing
Who it was tested with: Children aged 6 to 8 years from a peri-urban disadvantaged community in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (n=184).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Children aged 6 to 8 years from KwaZulu-Natal were enrolled (n = 184). Three parameters of assessment were used: clinical data, biochemical data (haemoglobin levels and iron studies) and school performance (interviews with caregivers, teachers and the children)." The study measured associations between anaemia and development outcomes but lacked adequate statistical power to determine real-world effects on school performance.
Sample size inadequate for statistical conclusions about psychomotor development and school performance due to low prevalence of outcomes. Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation. No control or comparison group.
