The problem
Intervention: A six-month participatory, co-designed programme combining responsive feeding counselling, agricultural homestead food production, micronutrient supplementation and community health worker capacity building
Who it was tested with: 64 households with children aged 6 to 59 months in Ermera, Ainaro and Manufahi subdistricts, Timor-Leste.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design with a matched control group" - the study compares an intervention group with a matched comparison group, which fits the experimental tier even though it was not randomised.
Small sample of 64 households and only six months of follow-up. Quasi-experimental rather than randomised, so the groups may differ in unmeasured ways. The abstract gives no control group numbers, significance tests or haemoglobin results. The components were delivered together, so their individual effects cannot be separated.
