The problem
Intervention: Three delivery strategies for post-discharge malaria chemoprevention (PDMC): (A) facility-based drug distribution at discharge with community health worker home visit reminders; (B) monthly community-based drug delivery by CHWs with phone reminders; (C) all courses dispensed at discharge without adh
Who it was tested with: Children under 10 years hospitalised with severe anaemia or severe malaria and clinically stable at discharge in central and southern Benin.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A cluster-randomised implementation trial will be conducted in central and southern Benin across urban and rural settings. Clusters, defined as villages within the catchment areas of two referral hospitals, will be randomly allocated (1:1:1) to one of three arms." The study employs a randomised controlled design with cluster randomisation, representing experimental evidence tier methodology, though outcome direction cannot be determined until results are published.
This is a protocol document describing a planned trial; no results or findings are yet available as the trial was registered in September and November 2024.
