Summary
Written by AI, not yet AICS's view · claude-sonnet-5-5This study looked at whether pregnant women in their third trimester took their iron and folic acid tablets as advised, and whether this was linked to anemia. It was done in the Plered Community Health Center area in Cirebon, Indonesia, with 50 women. Most women (80%) took the tablets as advised, and 20% had anemia. The authors report a statistically significant link between taking the tablets as advised and anemia. Anemia in pregnancy is described as a risk to both mothers and fetuses.
Key points
- 50 third-trimester pregnant women were included in a case-control style observational study.
- 40 women (80%) were adherent to iron and folic acid tablets and 10 (20%) were not.
- Anemia was found in 10 women (20%).
- A chi-square test showed a significant association between adherence and anemia (p = 0.000).
- Among 82 third-trimester women in the area, 10 were identified with anemia.
Limitations
The sample is small and from a single health center, and the abstract gives no effect size, no direction of the association in numbers, and no adjustment for other factors. It measures only the mother's anemia, not outcomes for babies or children, and it cannot show that the tablets cause lower anemia.
Abstract
Abstract Anemia during pregnancy is a common health problem that may increase the risk of complications for both mothers and fetuses. In the working area of Plered Community Health Center, among 82 third-trimester pregnant women as of April 2026, 10 were identified as having anemia. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between adherence to iron and folic acid tablet (IFA) consumption and the occurrence of anemia among pregnant women. An observational analytic study with a case-control approach was conducted involving 50 third-trimester pregnant women. Adherence to IFA consumption was assessed using an IFA consumption monitoring form, while anemia status was determined based on hemoglobin levels recorded in the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) handbook and medical records. Univariate analysis showed that 40 respondents (80%) were adherent to IFA consumption, while 10 respondents (20%) were non-adherent. Anemia was identified in 10 respondents (20%). Bivariate analysis using the Chi-square test demonstrated a statistically significant association between adherence to IFA consumption and the occurrence of anemia (p = 0.000). These findings indicate that adherence to iron and folic acid supplementation is significantly associated with the occurrence of anemia among pregnant women.
