Summary
Written by AI, not yet AICS's view · claude-sonnet-5-5This study looked at whether children who were born with low birth weight are more likely to be stunted. It used a case-control design with 750 children aged 12–59 months in the area served by Puskesmas Pasawahan, Kuningan Regency, Indonesia. Of these, 150 were stunted (cases) and 600 were not stunted (controls). Children with a history of low birth weight were much more likely to be stunted. The authors recommend starting prevention during pregnancy.
Key points
- The sample was 750 children aged 12–59 months: 150 stunted cases and 600 non-stunted controls (1:4).
- 710 children (94.7%) had no history of low birth weight and 40 (5.3%) did.
- Low birth weight history was significantly associated with stunting (p<0.001).
- The odds ratio was 6.45 (95% CI 3.284–12.678).
- The authors recommend prevention from pregnancy through antenatal care, maternal nutrition monitoring, prevention of low birth weight, and interventions in the first 1,000 days.
Limitations
This is an observational case-control study from one health centre area, using routine data from the e-PPGM application and only bivariate analysis, so it shows an association and not cause, and other factors were not adjusted for. It does not test any intervention.
Abstract
Abstract Background: Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem affecting physical growth, cognitive development, productivity, and human resource quality. One factor associated with stunting is a history of Low Birth Weight (LBW). This study aimed to determine the association between LBW history and stunting among children under five in the working area of Pasawahan Community Health Center, Kuningan Regency. Methods: This observational analytic study used a case-control design. The sample comprised 750 children aged 12–59 months, including 150 stunted children as cases and 600 non-stunted children as controls (1:4). Data were obtained from the e-PPGM (Sigizi Kesga) application for 2024–2025 and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the chi-square test and Odds Ratio (OR). Results: A total of 710 children (94.7%) had no LBW history, while 40 (5.3%) had a history of LBW. LBW history was significantly associated with stunting (p<0.001), with an OR of 6.45 (95% CI 3.284–12.678). Conclusion: LBW history was significantly associated with stunting. Prevention should begin during pregnancy through antenatal care, maternal nutritional monitoring, prevention of LBW, and interventions during the first 1,000 days of life.
